Yarm 1914

Jonathan Henry worked as a groom for Mr W Danby of Yarm High street before responding to the call at the outbreak of hostilities and signing up in Darligton aged 29 on 4 September 1914. He arrived in France on 23 July 1915 and acted as a driver. He went absent without leave on 18 April 1915 when he should have returned for duty. He was aprehended by police on 25 April 1915. He was docked 7 days pay and received 7 days field punishment number (FP) 2. Field punishment was introduced when flogging was abolished in 1888 and involved hard labour and being restrained using fetters and handcuffs. FP2 allowed the soldier to move and march with his regiment. He similarly was a day late reporting for duty on 11 July 1915 and lost a days pay. However on 7 August 1916 he was drunk when he should have been in charge of the base. He was court marshalled and given 56days FP1.The restraint is to a fixed object such as a gun for up to 2 hours per day. This given and was granted 7 days leave back in the UK from 23 October 1915 and again 10 days from 9 September 1917. He returned home to his mother Mary Anne in Bridge Street on 25 January 1919. His experiences of the army life must have not have deterred Jonathan since he joined the Green Howards at Northallerton on 14 April 1921 aged 36.
